Silk painting is the ancient art of applying dye to silk. Laura uses luscious Habotai silk, high-quality French dyes and water-based gutta resist to delineate form. Applied in a watercolor manner, the dyed silk is then steamed for several hours. This steaming process joins the silk fiber and dyes molecularly, providing incredibly vibrant, iridescent colors that no other medium is capable of. Painting on silk is a challenging and unforgiving art form, but it is also very rewarding because no other medium is capable of creating such luminescent colors. The portfolio below highlights some of the new and in-progress silk paintings.
