silk painting

Silk painting is the ancient art of applying dye to silk. Laura uses luscious Habotai silk, high-quality French dyes and resists to delineate formApplied in a watercolor manner, the dyed silk is then steamed for several hours. This process joins the silk fiber and dyes molecularly, providing incredibly vibrant, iridescent colors. Painting on silk is a challenging and unforgiving art form, but it is also very rewarding because no other medium is capable of creating such luminescent colors. The portfolio below highlights some of the new and in-progress silk paintings.

Laura's recent silk paintings "Yuba Ravens" and "Vibrance" were selected for the juried exhibition of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival's 2026 Art Show. Her pieces were on display at the Granucci Gallery at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley, California. ("Yuba Ravens" sold)
